A MATTER OF TASTE: ART EXPERIENCE

Maui-based contemporary artist, Ben Kikuyama, presents his first one-man art show on the island of Kauai. Presented will be works from his “Cracked” and “+” series. Opening reception for the general public is from 6:30 – 8:30pm.

Prior to the general reception will be a special preview, “A Matter Of Taste: Art Experience”. Viewers will have the opportunity to experience select pieces from the artist’s “Cracked” and “+” series in an innovative presentation involving art and specially crafted hors d’oeuvres. Casual oriental-style seating. Event is free and is limited to five couples (ten spaces total). Reservations will be given on a first come, first served basis, so reserve your seat early. 5:30- 6:30pm

In a career spanning over 25 years, Ben Kikuyama has explored a wide range of territory within the art world, from painting to sculpture to installations and performance pieces. One of the threads that often run through his work is the juxtaposing of unexpected subject matter and materials.

In his Cracked Series, Kikuyama explores the crack as a motif and medium. Finding beauty in what many view as a defect or fault, Kikuyama imbues his pieces with this usually unwanted element, adding a sense of mortality and sensuous fragility. In doing so, the works resonate with a kind of grungy elegance.

Kikuyama’s interest in objects or spaces where disparate elements intersect is the inspiration for his + (plus) Series. These hybrid fusion pieces incorporate a number of diverse and often incongruent and unexpected material and elements to create something wholly new.
